East Group vs. West Group

Every Kua number belongs to one of two energetic groups:

• East Group (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9): Your favorable directions are North, South, East, and Southeast. Powered by Water, Wood, and Fire elements.
• West Group (Kua 2, 6, 7, 8): Your favorable directions are Northeast, Northwest, Southwest, and West. Powered by Earth and Metal elements.

Calculation Principles

This calculator follows classical Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) Feng Shui rules for personal Kua calculations:

1. Solar Year Correction (Lichun): The Feng Shui calendar follows the Solar Year, which starts on or around February 4th (Lichun). If your birth date falls between January 1st and February 3rd, the calculator adjusts for the previous solar year.
2. 2-Digit Reduction Algorithm: Classical formulas sum the last two digits of the solar birth year to derive the single-digit base number.
3. Central Earth (Kua 5) Shift: Kua 5 occupies the center of the grid with no standalone cardinal direction. In classical Feng Shui, males born under Kua 5 adopt Kua 2 (Kun) directions, and females adopt Kua 8 (Gen) directions.

How to Calculate Kua Number for Females

To calculate a female Kua number, use your Solar Birth Year (if born before February 4, subtract 1 year from your birth year):

• Born Before 2000:
  1. Add the last two digits of your solar birth year and reduce to a single digit (e.g., 1988 → 8 + 8 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7).
  2. Add 5 to the single digit (7 + 5 = 12).
  3. Reduce to a single digit (1 + 2 = Kua 3).
• Born In or After 2000: Follow the same steps, but add 6 instead of 5.

*Note: If the final female result equals 5, it automatically transitions to Kua 8 (West Group).

How to Calculate Kua Number for Males

To calculate a male Kua number, start with your Solar Birth Year (if born before February 4, subtract 1 year from your birth year):

• Born Before 2000:
  1. Add the last two digits of your solar birth year and reduce to a single digit (e.g., 1987 → 8 + 7 = 15 → 1 + 5 = 6).
  2. Subtract that number from 10 (10 - 6 = Kua 4).
• Born In or After 2000: Follow the same steps, but subtract from 9 instead of 10.

*Note: If the final male result equals 5, it automatically transitions to Kua 2 (West Group).
